Parowan Gap Petroglyphs

June 15, 2014

Several centuries ago Native Americans traveling through the area stopped and pecked designs onto the smooth faces of large boulders found on the east side of the gap. Over the years many of the boulders have been covered with these chiseled figures known as petroglyphs.

What these designs mean is still unknown. Archaeologists debate that they represent concepts, ideas or actual happenings.

How I use macadamia oil for skin and hair care

June 10, 2014

Facial moisturizer – It is important to use a pure facial oil to rebalance oil production and repair the skin. I use straight macadamia oil as my facial moisturizer and I love it! If you like, experiment with mixing jojoba oil with macadamia oil.

Makeup Remover – You can also use macadamia oil to gently remove makeup, even stubborn mascara. Follow my Makeup Remover recipe but substitute macadamia oil instead of the jojoba. Or, if you like, use half macadamia oil and half jojoba. I get great results with any of these options.

Eye serum – Because it absorbs so quickly, macadamia oil makes a moisturizing and reparative eye serum that you can even use under makeup. Use just the smallest amount and gently pat it around your eyes.

Facial cleanser – Not only will macadamia oil remove your makeup, it will gently but effectively cleanse your skin. For my oil cleansing blend, I use equal parts of this organic castor oil mixed with this organic macadamia oil.

Body Moisturizer – I use macadamia oil as an allover moisturizer when I get out of the shower.

Hair moisturizer – Thanks to the 100% raw Morrocco Method products, my hair is soft, healthy, voluminous and growing back thicker. But if you struggle with heat-damaged or dry hair, I would highly recommend using just a few drops of macadamia oil on the ends of your hair. It works wonders to soften and moisturize!

DIY Makeup Remover

June 10, 2014

You will need:

Scant 2 oz. jojoba oil (or use more if you have a bigger jar)
1 capsule of non-GMO vitamin E (Technically, this is optional but extremely recommended)
Optional: 3 drops of soothing essential oil (I use carrot seed essential oil)
Dark glass dropper bottle for storage, such as this one
Here’s what to do:

Fill the glass jar about 3/4 of the way with the jojoba oil. Prick the vitamin E capsule with a needle or the tip of a sharp knife. Squeeze the contents of the capsule into the jar. Place the lid on the jar and shake well to combine.

When you are ready to remove your makeup, use about 1/2 teaspoon of your DIY Makeup Remover. Gently massage it onto your face, especially the eye area. It removes mascara like a charm, just be sure you use enough to fully saturate the eye area. Then, gently wipe off the oil with a cotton pad (please use GMO-free cotton pads, like these) or damp washcloth. Voila, makeup all gone!

Cleanse your face with the Honey Cleansing Method or a gentle facial cleanser (this one is my favorite!).

Because light can damage and oxidize (rancidify) the jojoba oil and vitamin E, do not store this in a clear glass jar. The dark glass prevents light from oxidizing the oils.

DIY Honey Shampoo

June 10, 2014

Ingredients

Raw honey (also called “unpasteurized” honey), I recommend this one
Filtered water (see Instructions for measurements), I use and recommend this filter
A few drops of essential oils, such as carrot seed oil, optional

Instructions

Make the shampoo “single serving” basis to prevent spoilage. Here’s the basic ratio, but you can adjust it as desired: 1 Tbs. raw honey and 3 Tbs. filtered water. If necessary, slightly heat the mixture over very low heat to help dissolve the honey. Yes, this is really watery… that is how it is supposed to be.

If desired, add a few drops of essential oil. I like adding two drops of lavender essential oils and two drops of carrot seed oil. The essential oils add a light fragrance and also help with any flaky scalp issues. The carrot seed oil (found here) is very nourishing to the hair.

Wet hair, then massage a few tablespoons of the honey shampoo on the scalp. Massage well to distribute over the scalp. Don’t worry about getting the mixture on the ends of the hair, just the scalp area. Rinse well. No need to follow with any conditioner.

If desired, you can follow with a DIY apple cider vinegar rise, recipe and instructions found here.

Soothing Oat Facial Cleanser Recipe

June 10, 2014

Ingredients

1/4 cup dry rolled oats (uncooked)
1 teabag of organic chamomile tea (make sure it contains no other ingredients) OR 4 drops of chamomile essential oil
1 Tbs. bentonite clay (find it here)
Glass jar, for storing the facial cleanser (I used an empty spice jar)

Instructions

Use a coffee grinder, spice grinder or Magic Bullet to grind the rolled oats into a fine powder. It should be soft and powdery, not gritty. Alternatively, use 1/4 cup oat flour. Transfer the oat powder to a bowl.
In the coffee/spice grinder, place about 1 tsp. of the oat powder along with the contents of the teabag. Grind until the chamomile is a fine powder, then transfer to the bowl. If using the essential oil, skip this step and add the oil directly into the bowl with the oat powder.
Stir together the oat powder, chamomile powder and bentonite clay. Store in a jar.
This cleanser will not remove makeup, so it works well in the morning. To use, wet face with warm water. Use about 1/2 teaspoon of the facial cleanser, add a few drops of warm water, and massage it gently over your face before rinsing it off. Avoid the eye area.

Amazing Benefits & Uses For Hydrogen Peroxide

June 10, 2014

1. Whiten Clothes – An Alternative to Beach

Add a cup of peroxide to white clothes in your laundry to whiten them. Peroxide is great to get rid of blood stains on clothes and carpets. If there is blood on clothing, just pour it directly on the spot, let it sit for about a minute, then rub and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

2. Rejuvenating Detoxifying Bath

Use about 2 quarts 3% hydrogen peroxide to a tub of warm water. Soak for at least a 1/2 hour, adding hot water as needed to maintain a comfortable water temperature.

3. Foot Fungus

While studies have yet to have been done to show this works for everyone, it is a quick home remedy that is worth a try. To help treat foot fungus, spray a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry.

4. Douche

Add 2 capfuls of 3% hydrogen peroxide into warm distilled water one to two times a week to remove even chronic yeast infections.

5. Infections

Soak any infections or cuts in 3% for five to ten minutes several times a day. Even gangrene that would not heal with any medicine has been healed by soaking in hydrogen peroxide. Put half a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus or other skin infections.

6. Bird Mites Infections

Patients infected by tiny mites report that hydrogen peroxide effectively kills the mites on their skins. They spray it on their skin a couple of times (with a few minutes between the applications) with amazing results.

7. Sinus Infections

A tablespoon of 3% Hydrogen peroxide added to 1 cup of non-chlorinated water can be used as a nasal spray. Depending on the degree of sinus involvement, one will have to adjust the amount of peroxide used.

8. Wound Care

3% H2O2 is used medically for cleaning wounds, removing dead tissue, and as an oral debriding agent. Peroxide stops slow (small vessel) wound bleeding/oozing, as well.

Some sources recommend soaking infections or cuts for five to ten minutes several times a day. However, washing and rinsing action is sufficient. You shouldn’t leave the solution on open tissue for extended periods of time as, like many oxidative antiseptics, hydrogen peroxide causes mild damage to tissue in open wounds. Therefore it is important to use with caution.

9. Mouthwash

Many people don’t realize that hydrogen peroxide makes a very effective and inexpensive mouthwash. Use 3% H202 – add a dash of liquid chlorophyll for flavoring if desired.

10. Toothpaste

Use baking soda and add enough 3% H202 to make a paste.

11. Toothbrush Cleaning

Or, just dip your brush in 3% H202 and brush. Soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide to keep them free of germs.

12. Hair Lightening

Peroxide is a bleaching agent and is used for lightened hair. Dilute 3% Hydrogen peroxide with water (50 / 50) and spray the solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages, but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually so it’s not a drastic change.

13. In the Dishwasher

Add 2 oz. of 3% hydrogen peroxide to your regular washing formula.

Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour or spray hydrogen peroxide (and then vinegar) on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria.

14. To Clean Mirrors

I use peroxide to clean my mirrors, there is no smearing.

15. Powerful Disinfectant

Combination of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide make a cheap, effective and non-toxic disinfectant agent and is
said to be more effective at killing pathogens than bleach. As it is non-toxic, you can use it to disinfect fruits and vegetables, as well as pet toys, equipment and cages. In tests run at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, pairing Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide mists, kills virtually all Salmonella, Shigella, or E. coli bacteria on heavily contaminated food and surfaces.

Directions
You need TWO spray bottles. DO NOT MIX the solutions together. Put straight vinegar in one and straight Hydrogen peroxide in the other spray bottle.

NOTE: Light destroys peroxide rather quickly. It’s best to leave it in its original bottle and screw in a spray head. DO NOT DILUTE THEM.

Remember for any sanitizer to work properly, the surface has to be clean before you use it.

When you want to sanitize a surface (vegetables, cutting board, counters, sink, cages, toys. toilets, floors, etc.), spray one (it doesn’t matter which one you use first) on the surface, then you spray on the other. When they mix, for a brief time the chemical action of the two make a very powerful sanitizer. You can rinse off the surface afterwards, if you want, but the result is non-toxic. Fortunately it is cheap. Added note: We use it in the bathroom to sanitize the counters, toilets, floors, etc.

16. Humidifiers/Steamers

Use 1 pint of 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon of water.

17. Vegetable Soak

Use as a vegetable wash or soak to kill bacteria and neutralize chemicals. Add 1/4 cup of 3% H202 to a full sink of cold water. Soak light-skinned (light lettuce) 20 minutes, thicker skinned (like cucumbers) 30 minutes. Drain, dry and refrigerate. Prolongs freshness.

If time is a problem, spray vegetables (and fruits) with a solution of 3%. Let stand for a few minutes, rinse and dry.

Parowan Canyon Hidden Haven Falls

June 9, 2014

Today it was a special day and we planned a special hiking with the kids.

Hidden Haven Falls are located in a small slot canyon feeding into Parowan Canyon in Utah.

As we hiked through this canyon we were stunned by the huge areas of ground covered with wild lavender. It was beautiful and smelled great.

Can you see the falls? This is a favorite place for winter ice climbers. The falls build up quite a thick ice mass and is a good technical winter climb. We will be sure to come back on winter time to see the different in the scenery and the fall.

Standard

Godless America

May 7, 2014

The freedom of religion is being pushed out of public life, schools and even churches.

Our Founding Fathers considered religious liberty our ‘first freedom,’ and the bedrock upon which all other freedoms rest. They understood that one’s right to worship God and follow his conscience according to the principles of his religious faith was foundational to civic tranquility. This is one of the most important distinctions that makes America an exceptional nation — if not the most important.

But something is really wrong. The Obama administration wants to force religious organizations and Christian business owners to provide insurance for birth control and abortion-inducing drugs in direct violation of their religious beliefs. The military conducted training sessions that labeled Evangelical Christians and Catholics as examples of religious extremists. The Internal Revenue Service launched investigations into pro-life organizations, demanding to know the contents of their prayers.

This is happening right here, right now, in the United States of America. We are under attack from within — from an enemy who wants to remove any mention of God from the public marketplace.

Our society strives to avoid any possibility of offending anyone — except God 🙁

We ask God to bless America, but we elected a president whose pastor asked God to damn America. We ask God to bless America, but we slaughter millions of unborn babies. We ask God to bless America, but we silence His children.

God bless America? We should be on our knees asking for His mercy instead.

It’s time for a new generation of believers to rise up and restore the dream of our Founding Fathers – the dream of a nation where all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. The dream of a people who declare we are still one nation under God.
